According to his lawyer, Ex-FDA Head, Dr. Lester Crawford is under criminal investigation regarding alleged financial improprieties and false statements to Congress.
According to the New York Times, his lawyer, Barbara Van Gelder, advised Dr. Crawford to invoke his Fifth Amendment right. In other words, to keep quiet.
Dr. Crawford abruptly resigned last year in September, not long after being confirmed for the job. Crawford, or his wife, according to documents released by the Dept of Health and Human Services, had sold shares in companies which the FDA regulates. At the time of selling those shares he was FDA's Deputy Commissioner and Acting Commissioner.
While Crawford headed the FDA, a controversial issue arose regarding Barr Laboratory's application to market the emergency contraceptive Plan B as an OTC. Crawford persistently delayed action. Plan B continues to be available only on prescription.
After resigning Crawford went on to work for Policy Directions Inc., a lobbying firm.
